Default Can you really make money with photos?

Hello! I've been interested in photography for years. I recently sold my beloved Nikon N60 and plan on getting a new DSLR. I really plan on just doing photography as a hobby and learning as much as I can and experimenting. My question is is there any market to make money from your photos without doing weddings or portraits? I'm out of work right now and could really use some extra income. I know I can sell prints on sites like Etsy but do people really sell photos online? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forums..

If by that do you mean is it easy to take photos of random crap in your own time and sell it as fine art or stock, no, it's not easy at all. It's not completely impossible, but bear in mind you're not only competing with professionals who do it as their career, but literally tens of thousands of people who wondered the very same thing you asked, and then threw their shingle out there...

...of course we don't know, you could be absolutely spectacular. If you think you can compete with folks with advanced skills, professional gear and the time and resources to create a presence and a brand to push their product, go for your life.

If not, well, just enjoy taking pictures.

Lol. No I know it wouldn't be easy. I would like to make a career out of it someday just not interested in weddings or portraits. I would be doing it for myself and of course wouldn't mind making money with it too. I feel I have a good "eye" just need a lot more experience with the functions of the actual camera. I don't have much experience with manual functions but can't wait to learn. BTW loving this site so far.
