The first thing you need to do is what a few other people above said: get a great portfolio of images. If your work isn't great, it's hard to sell yourself.

I photographed A TON for free in the beginning. Do I regret it? Yes. People always promised to send me referrals, and they never did. So if you are going to shoot for free, do it for the sole reason of building your portfolio. Don't have any other reasons for doing so.

One of the most valuable tips I ever heard about shooting for free came from Michael Grecco, a very successful photographer in Los Angeles. He said if someone wants you to shoot for free, tell them they at least have to cover your costs. Whether that includes wear and tear on the camera, if you have to rent equipment, gas for your vehicle, food for the day, or an assistant, etc. And then, tell them you want them to pay you for the next job. You'll shoot the first one for free, but to give you a signed contract for the next job first. That way they have to deliver. They get one for free, and you get one paid. Make sense?

Also, as Xposurepro said, loyalty programs are great. I have had great success giving free photo sessions to past customers who send me new clients. While time is money, you don't have to give out actual dollars to a client in a referral fee.

And if someone wants to pay less, don't budge on your price. Give them more in their photo package so they feel they are getting a better deal! This tip has worked wonders for me.

Take care,
