Don't rule out getting an off-brand lens. Tokina lenses are actually pretty good. Sigma's are all right, as well. The goal is to buy the best lens you can afford - and then work your way up.

Based on what you have described for a club scenes of the crowd, a 24-70 lens may work best. I would avoid fixed focal length lenses - as sometimes you won't have room to back up to accommodate a 85mm lenses. The 24-70 gives you room to work.

Default Nikon 35mm 1.8

If you decide to go the route of the 35mm 1.8 AF-S, I've got a next to new one I'll sell you for $150 shipped to CONUS. I switched to the 50mm so I no longer need the 35. I've got both Nikon caps and the pouch.
