Default Day Rates

When setting your day rate does that include just the shooting or the editing as well. If you need 1 day for the shoot and one day to edit the photo's how many days would you be charging the client.

This would be related to commercial shoots as opposed to wedding or portraits.

Thanks

We look at it a little differently. We charge a session fee based on the number of subjects and the location. All prints, enlargements, and specialty products are sold on an ala carte basis. (no packages) We do not charge a separate fee for editing time. For weddings and events we charge by the hour while there, plus a location fee if necessary. All finished products are packages, and once again, sold on an ala carte basis.

Haven't run across anyone who charges for editing.

A photograph that you sell is a finished product and if editing the images is required for you to do to get that photo correctly, then that is part of your workflow that your clients don't need to pay for.

If you charge for editing, then you are also giving them the option to not have the photos edited to make things cheaper. Now what are you going to do if they decide don't edit the photos but simply supply the photos as they come out of the camera?

Charge for the prints or digital file accordingly. If you want to include time spent in preparing the files, then do so and include that with the pricing. But don't say (pricing includes editing).

LOL, different story in my country.

a) Usually by packages which determine the number of prints and so on
b) freelance photographers sell their service by clients regardless the number of days spent. But usually 1 day. Most of them shot without assistant (different from what happen in US and other countries)
c) Editing a photo - starts from USD15

I prefer most of the pictures published in DPS than their photos. Some of the "professional" photos really look funny for me ;D. Anyone interested to come over Malaysia and provide photography service? I am sure you will gain lots of clients. THis is how Malaysian evaluate photographers:

a) Where do you from? As long as they know you are from overseas, you must be a excellent photographer. Only rich people will get your service as they have the perception that, your service must be very expensive without asking you.
b) Averagely, the normal rate for 1 junior photographer (with on-camera flash) is about USD 1500 / wedding day
c) If you happen to take photo in the photography shop, the photographer could be someone like me - noob, who work part-time.

See the sample taken by a professional wedding photographer in my country..I believe my baby is able to take this kind of photo too.

If the job as a whole takes two days then you charge 2 days.
Post production, rather than editing, is more than just adjusting the actual shots.
It includes all the sorting, cataloguing, preparing for transmission/burning/printing etc.

Off course whether or not you show that on the invoice would depend a lot on the type of work you are doing.
In commercial work (my area) then it is pretty normal to include a line item for post production.

In weddings/portraits then all that should be in on the base package price unless they are "specials".
