I liked shooting for free, and did it a lot in the beginning. I wasn't 100% sure what I was doing, and shooting for free was a stress-free way of expirementing with subjects, lighting, and background.
Now that I've shot quite a few free gigs, I know what I feel confident charging for (or turning down because I don't like that type of photography). As to your original question, I like to give the client a few of the best shots, editted and uploaded to my Zenfolio site. From there, the client can download the file or buy prints. |

Keep in mind that it's typically easier to go from free to well-paying gigs than inexpensive gigs to well-paying gigs.
That is, I'd rather work for free for the right client (the type of client I want to attract in the future) than work for a small amount of cash with a client I wouldn't want to work with in the future. The cheap client is going to share with their cheap friends at work, cheap friends on facebook, and cheap neighbors. There will always be the random success story, but that unlikely chance is nothing to base a business on. After reading through your concerns - I'd suggest you do it for free. No pressure, give them high-res files of the best pics to use as they please (the photogs still using print sales as major income will disagree there), and if you screw up completely - tell them you'll give them their money back. If you get experience and a couple shots for your portfolio it's a win for you at this stage. Build your business right from the start (delivering great photos and customer service) and the money will follow. If it doesn't, one of those things isn't as great as you thought. |

Charge at least $25.00 per headshot, but give them FB resolution images, otherwise they'll get bigger prints made.
