How much do commercial photographers charge (avarage)?

I have been asked how much I wish to be paid, for work I did for my work place, having spent 90 minutes photographing a visiting group for the marketing department.

I have kind of become their unoffial photographer on top of my other duties, but have no idea about how much a commercial photographer charges. I'm not looking to charge the same but would like to have a figure to work from.

can anyone help with this? preferably a UK based photographer!

It varies, as a rough guide I live in the West Midlands and charge £80/hour plus per item / liscence etc, AndyW works in London I believe, he's usually a good bloke to ask.

Depends upon the job. I charge anywhere from $600.00 1/2 day to $1200.00 for a full day.
Also you need to find out how the photos will be used and what license they want..

Rates vary massively depending on area and what the actual job is really.

I do a half or full day (£450/800) as a base rate with everything else on top for most stuff when I am on location. Products done on my premises get charged out differently.

As you are an employee of the company then I would imagine they would not be looking at you charging a "proper" commercial rate if these are being done during your normal working hours.
If they are outside your normal hours then by all means charge it as a "proper" rate though.

Try pitching it at your current hourly rate + 50% and see what they say.

I have done a little bit for my wife's work at £40 an hour, or £25 for half an hour... its quite cheap though compared to a lot of photographers.

If you haven't agreed a price in advance, and by the sounds of things you've done the work before speaking about cost, then I'd be very wary of going in too high as it might create tension which you dont want at work.

How much experience do you have? Did they ask you to do it because you are a pro but in a different area? Or are you just someone with a keen interest in photography?

I ask that as it will (IMO) impact on how much you can get away with charging.

Do you have any examples of the work so I can have a look and let you know how it compares to other commercial examples I've seen? My wife's company books a lot of photographers for various commerical projects so I've seen a lot of work of this kind.

They charge up to £120 an hour, but some will charge less (as low as £60 an hour) and this includes the images.

Thank you all very much for your responces

I am not a pro photographer in this area, and only just starting to build up a name in some very different areas. I was asked by my employers to do shots for their marketing as a matter of covenience as I live on site during the week.

After having spoken to the marketing manager, I have put forward a payment request of £50 an hour based on 50% of what they would normaly pay, which I'm happy with and awaiting confirmation on.

Again thank you for your replies.

I think that seems about right tbh... obviously they'd want a cheaper deal or they'd just have hired a pro, but you need to make sure they payment is worth while for you too.

I'm presuming your rate is for the time taken during the photoshoot and doesn't include editing time? I dont know any photographers that charge for the editing time

I used to charge for the editing time on top, but it's fair easier for people to grasp £80/hour instead of (£40 shoot + £40 PP) / hour

You're presumption is correct, I have only charged for the time I spent taking the shots and not for the editing. TBH, I do very little editing to my photos anyway, only ever moving away from iPhoto when I need something more advanced.
