If you sell the file, retain the copyright, put in a contract what rights they are purchasing, how much for each and duration.

Not bad for one shot. 10 k brochure runs are a lot. However either way it must make you feel good to have your picture used. I would ask for the pdf of the brochure... Its always nice to have a copy of what you were published in. I also would ask for a hard copy. Last thing i was published in they actual sent me the pdf before printing to see if I approved. LOL.

First off, that was a great photo you took. I am sure a lot of people would like to hang it on their walls.

A 5' print is not cheap. Take that into account - along with all costs you may incur - including CC processing fees. More money in your pocket! And always over-estimate what it will cost to ship and insure.

Personally, I feel they got a great deal with what you charged for the brochures. If they come back and want to purchase again, raise the rates. Your work is unique enough that they won't be able to go on some stock website and find something comparable.

Congrats,

I would never sell them a full digital file for their own printing except for brochure work.

You have a top class image and you should have it as a standard fine art print available all the time. Loads of folks would love it.

Sadly, art sales are really hopping, though I've been getting a few more requests lately.

The marketing firm in charge of the brochure called me the other day, and said "The less we have to deal with the print, the better"...to which I laughed, and said "I was thinking the same thing". So after a few minutes of discussing options, we decided the photo would look the best and take the least amount of effort if it was printed on a 30"x60" piece of aluminum. My costs are right around $600, so I'm charging them about $1200. They even sent me a photo of the room they're going to hang it in, and asked if I had some photos that would compliment the big one.

Luckily, I have a lot of photos that kind of look the same or similar

Congrats on the sales. For me, a %300 markup seems about right, I think you're selling yourself short at a %200 markup.

I don't have a problem selling digital rights to photos, it's how the world seems to be going. That said, contracts are a wonderful thing to have.

Congrats again.
