WHO trolling for freebies

Received this email today:

Request for permission to reproduce photographs from your collection.

Dear Mr. De Pould,

The World Health Organization is developing a number of training tools to be used in an online course intended for WHO staff titled WHO Research Ethics Online Training. We anticipate making these training tools more broadly available as well.

We would like to ask permission to use the following photographs from your collection. We will give a full bibliographic reference to the source of material.

Color me unimpressed. The picture isn't even special, but the fact that a UN-affiliated, multinational organization is trying to skimp on photos annoys the bejeezzus out of me. I work at a large, well-known foundation. We pay for stock media.

To be fair ... at least they asked first.

Are they actually from WHO, or just phishing? That surprises me, too, that an organization that size would try to take shortcuts.

Why offer to pay you before trying to get it for free? Seems like a good tactic to me. Like you said, the photo isn't special.

Also I doubt this is real.

Man, on a fortunate image I'm lucky to get >20 views, I'd just be happy someone took notice.

Phishing was my first thought, but the address is coming from their domain, and it seems like an odd way to phish, especially since they didn't ask for personal info.

I told them to click the request a Getty license button.

Tell them that since their CEO. CFO and everyone else on staff gets paid, so should you!

I don't remember who posted this, but I remember seeing a response here on DPS that made me literally laugh out loud. A non-profit organization had been asking someone for freebies and the person came here asking for advice. One person said to say, "You might be non-profit, but I'm not." LOL!

I am working with the local Applebee's restaurant there in Dewitt. We are redesigning the décor the restaurant by replacing all of the items on the walls with digitally printed murals.

The murals are compiled of digital images that represent the community from festivals, events, landmarks, parades, schools, etc.

I would love to obtain images form you of the Jamesville Balloon Festival and represent within the Applebee's.

We always print the name of the persons photos next to the images with the mural.
