I was publish for free a couple of times in small things. It was all non profit but hey I can say that my picture was in the national plumbers association quality magazine. LOL They cited me and put my url. Also they sent me the magazine. :P Sure I could of asked for money but this was before I really went pro so it was kinda cool to be noticed. If your wondering the picture. It was this one. One of my few jernalistic event type of pictures. It was during our water shortage and extreme drought in georgia.

I don't mind people asking to use them for free because you know, why pay when they might say sure have it free right? It's part of business.

What I don't like is when they start off with the poor-me attitude and keep ramming home the "we have no money" crap. Recently a MASSIVE MASSIVE HUGE charity contacted me, actually 2 have this month;

This was one:
"Unfortunately, being a charity event we have limited budget however if you could help us we would be able to offer you logo space on the menus and the opportunity to showcase your service to a 100+ event organisers. Of course, I hope that you would also recognise the benefit of supporting the universal and compelling cause of beating cancer by inspiring our staff."

I quoted them standard price minus 8%. Never heard back.
EDIT: Tell you what I should have done, requested the list of the 100+ event organisers and watched how they (probably) didn't actually have a list of 100+ confirmed

This was another:
"I am contacting you regarding national fundraising campaign and the possibilities of your company getting involved.... at our event. The event .... will see over 5000 X and Y's at the event. The event is outside and we can provide a small 3x3 pop up tent and power if needed.

As a charity we have limited funds to put on our events and we were wondering whether it would be possible for to come along for free or at a reduced rate....I'm happy to chat about the opportunities further by phone or via email. "

I'm doing it with 66% off. We are now negotiating details and I have an offer which will generate sales of which they will get a % making it even more worth while for both parties. What I liked about the second enquiry was that they asked for free but understood it might not be possible and put in the reduced rate request, I appreciate that they ARE on a budget and that the more money they spend out the less they raise. But this person clearly also saw the VALUE in my product. I also liked the way it wasn't a case of "we have no money, give me for free, no reply you", it was more "if you can't, let's talk and see if we can work something out that's mutually viable".

Makes a big difference.

What blows me away is that Flickr will let you search for Creative Commons licensed materials that could be used for no cost and simply an attribution. There's no excuse for a cheap company not to search through the Commons and find something that will suit their needs that the artist has already decided he doesn't want paid for.

I used to submit articles to a small magazine. They paid $50 per article with photos... But it was something.

I freelanced for local papers while I was an undergrad. They didn't pay much either.

It's not even about the amount, it's just insulting that people expect free stuff. I mean, going to Africa costs money, so why should I give you images from that trip for free? British Airways doesn't accept photo credits.
