so, (in my opinion), the two very simple things Max used in these shots that can easily be done and make them effective:

1) Perspective. All four shots, despite the subject being central in the frame, are not shot head-on, which is instinctual. Rather he's shooting down into the frame. That perspective, the wide-angle approach brings some neat contextual distortion and makes it interesting.

2) Use of a rim-light. A really simple technique that in three of the four shots really evolves the simplicity of the shot, and more importantly creates separation from the car when he couldn't use a narrow DoF to do it (because the car is an integral part of the shot).

are there other things I like about them? Sure.. but those points that stand out to me as taking a non-dramatic environment (a car) and an untrained model (guy who owns said car) with no expensive gear to need to do it...

Remove the rim light, the model blends into the dark interior of the car. Shoot from the instinctual head-on position, there's nothing 'out of the ordinary'.

Other critics of your images have both pointed out you need to work on composition and also adding a back light. Max's shots made great use of both. They're easy to accomplish if you think about it..

3. Honestly, I had no friggin clue about this stuff when I shot it, my thought process is like this, "Hey, that'd be kinda cool, let's try that" and if it works, great. *shrug* No real mind bending type of hard thought went into these shots.
