Default Invited to Getty Images

I got an email saying:
Hi kelleyrie,

Flickr has partnered with the fabulous Getty Images to offer an invitation-only service for Flickr members to license their photos for commercial use.

The Getty Images team has noticed your work on Flickr, and is pleased to offer you an invitation to enroll with them. They have selected 6 of your photos for possible inclusion in the program. Here are a few of them:

So my question is, is this something y'all have done? What is it all about?

I've recently signed up with them, but haven't submitted my images yet, so I'm no real help there. You should be able to get to the private flickr group if you have specific questions.

This came up a couple times prior in this forum. When you read the fine print of the terms, there's some hideous exclusivity that Getty asserts over your Flickr images that keeps you from licensing them elsewhere, and for that, Getty takes 80% of what the client pays for the license.

Thus, the terse but accurate comment from Mr. Harvard about the trap that is accepting the Getty licensing through Flickr.

That's very true, but yet, in my opinion there is the potential for it to be beneficial in some ways. After all, 20% of something is more than 100% of nothing. I have images that I already license through other sources, and ever since I got the invite I have been seriously considering which images I am comfortable with licensing under such an agreement. I personally consider it more of a decision that comes down to the individual and how comfortable they are with the terms. If you go into it fully aware, then there's little issue. While I would love to license my own photos and get 100% of the money, there is still something to be said for the exposure you get through them too.

I'd say go for it Kelleyrie,as Nicole said 20% of something is better than 20% of nothing and you would be on the right side of future exposure for your photography work, good luck.

Getty Images are the biggest copyright trolls in the world, if you don't mind the fact that they like to threaten their own customers with lawsuits, by all means have at it..
