20-30 photos selected to be relevant to the client (no point in showing a firm of architects your photos from a fashion shoot). I would say, no more than 30, no less than 20. The most important thing about a portfolio is focus and if you can't show the client you're the one for the job in this many photos then you probably aren't the one for the job.

Get a large portfolio book which has pages which can be removed and replaced, so that you can take photos out and put them in to suit the client. The larger the better, preferably one which you struggle to carry under one arm (they don't really make portfolios which are so large as to be impossible to transport as this would defeat the point so I think saying, get the largest you can find, is a reasonable suggestion)

Mine has self-adhesive pages, peel back the cover and place the photo and a label on there, and put the cover back over.
