Default Selling Portrait Digital Files (Group or Individual Prices??)

Still doing the photography part-time, I constantly struggle with my pricing. My husband constantly tells me "set the prices and stick to it"! I know he's right, but I find it hard (and hope I'm not the only one) to stick to the prices when people constantly complain.

Lately I've re-evaluated my digital file pricing. Instead of a lump sum of say $500 for all images from the shoot (20-30), I considered pricing them individually: $35 each for 1-9, $31.50 each for 10-19, $28 each for 20+.

I'd like to know anyone's thoughts on these options. Do you find it more useful to do the large lump sum, which in my case would be less lucrative but possibly simpler? Or do you find individual works better to give more options? Or do you hate the thought of selling the digital files for portraits in general?

Thank you so much for your help!

First off, welcome to DPS, hope you get what you want.

What I would recommend first, is opening the "Search" button above, then selecting "Advanced Search" then searching only Post Titles and do two searches. One with the word "Price" and one with the word "Charge" and you'll get a ton of posts that have discussed this issue before and hopefully get some answers. It's a common issue with people starting out.

Also, check out the website of other local photogs and see what they charge. That way you'll see what the market is accepting in your area.

But if anyone wants to pipe in and answer this thread, that's great also!

If you're customers aren't complaining, you are not charging enough!, As Fuzzy said, check other locals out and be competitive, but don't undersell yourself.

i don't mean to hijack but it would be nice if we had a resource topic in this section "Earning with Photography" of a FAQ maybe? I know I posted a link to adoramaTV's pricing video like 3-4 times. Not complaining but I think it would be more efficient.
