Default Advice on pricing image for billboard use

I was contacted by the marketing department of a Hotel/Spa that would like to use one of my images on billboards in a couple of cities to advertise a Christmas promotion they are running. I did a bit of google based research and this thread seems to indicate the going rate would be around $1,800 for 3-5 billboards for 1-3 months.

But that post was from a few years ago and the going rates may be much different. I was hoping some of the pros might be offer some guidance...

Thanks in advance!
Mike

Been a long long time since I had a shot on a billboard but I don't think that figure is far out.

Here are a couple of calculators which may be of help

http://www.stockphotopricecalculator...alculator4.asp
master page

Or check out similar shots on Alamy or the like.

Thanks, that link seems broken but it is moot anyway. I did propose a rate of $400/billboard for up to 3 months and they declined. They said they were looking to pay $50 and I declined.

Still shaking my head about the laughable amount they wanted to pay...

Thanks anyway,
Mike

50 !!!! wow.
even 400 is lo but 50 - Yup, I would have "politely" declined that unless my details were on there bigger than theirs.

Just realised the first link is actually a unique URL so no good.
Second one should work though for future info.

I would research the local prices of the billboards, and I would ask them what's their overall budget for the advertising campaign as you ask for a certain percentage from that.

Check out this link that explains more on pricing for this type of situation - Chris Adval Learning Model Photography: WOW Share! 06: "How Much Should I Charge?" - Mark Wallace/AdoramaTV

Interesting video, thanks for the link(s). I like the sliding scale for licensing they noted, to me that seems far less complicated than needing to know rates for this use or that use or whatever. A percentage of the media buy based on a sliding scale is very straightforward and easy.

It probably would have resulted in a closer match between this client and I. But the good news is they really liked my image and did get back in touch with me. We worked out what I consider a fair price (lower than my original quote, but way more than their original offer).

Thanks again for the link and the responses!

Mike

Good for you!
How did they find your image, Flickr? I'd bet the majority of people on flickr would have sold for the $50 offered....

Congrats on the offer, must be a real ego boost.

Tell them for $50 you'll give them a photo taken with the lens cap on. Putting your name in the corner is another $50.

Yes, via Flickr and I agree that most Flickrite would probably have take the $50. But I've tried to listen and learn from Jim and Max and others on the forums here

Feels good yes. Charge extra for a watermark? Brilliant
