I know the B + W filters are expensive.........I have one on each of my lenses, with the exception of the 300 and 400 f2.8's. However, they are worth it.

Agreed with Susan.

I used to subscribe to this practice. Out of curiosity due to a discussion like this, I removed it for a shoot. There was a noticeable difference. I no longer use them.

Regardless of whether its a $200 or $10 filter, its still one more piece of glass between the object and the sensor.

Lens hoods do a good job of protecting against errant bumps and preventing contact between the front element and anything nasty, with the exception of pointy sticks etc.

If you subscribe to the notion of better safe than sorry, that's understandable. To say they're a must have and that they don't have an effect on IQ isn't true.

I'd rather be safe than sorry as my lenses are way too expensive to either replace or have the front elements buffered out. I have made a kick ass sharpening tool action in photoshop that will correct any little bit of unsharpness due to the B + W high quality glass.
