I had a Canon XTi and recently upgraded to the 7D. Every time I went to the camera store to buy the
7D, the salesperson suggested that I upgraded my lenses first. Better lenses with real glass are much better than kit lenses. You didn't specify what you had. I upgraded and added to all my lenses (and a fast lens will help you with low light situations) and then I decided to buy the 7D. I bought it because I can still use my CF cards and all my lenses and my flash. I think I can still use my remote as well. I love the 7D.

PS I kept the XTi as a second body...

Why do you want to strangle your 7D?

I was wondering that too.

I think he was referring to auto-focus issues...

If I had the money I'd add the 70-200 f/2.8L IS; for now I rent it as needed (can rent it from Calumet locally for $40 for a whole weekend). Renting is a great way to try out good glass before you invest; my first L lens cost more than my first dSLR (Canon 40D, which is now my backup body).
Hard to argue with this.

all the best
