Default Portfolio, anyone?

Do any of you carry a hard copy portfolio, anymore?

I was watching an old movie (14 years old) and the photog was on an interview and had a portfolio in hand.

Does anyone do that anymore?

If you were trying to get a big corporate or fashion gig I think photographers still carry them like in new york and stuff. Zack Arias carry's one..

Depends. Sometimes I carry my laptop or Ipad. Don't carry big ass portfolio prints, cases or binders anymore.

Yes. Definitely.

For individual clients I bring a small (8.5x11) portfolio along with my laptop.
For corporate clients, I have a 12x18 portfolio that comes along with my laptop.
For jobs (ie an actual 9-5 dayjob), I bring along a 16x20 portfolio, but these jobs are, for me, more graphic design than photography.

Nope, and I've never had anyone ask to see one either.

I just carry my iPad with me anytime some one may want to see examples. I like it as it allows me to have all my work with me and can show specifics depending on what they are looking for.

If you're gonna be taken seriously as a pro it's just one of those things you have to have. You may not always get asked for it, but it would be like, say, an accountant not being able to do long division, the need for it is mostly superseded by technology but still, it just looks unprofessional not to have it.

I just finished making mine, I'm really happy with it, I'll be taking it to meetings whether the client asks to see it or not.

ipads are a great way to take it forward into the future though, the crux is that you have to be able to let the client see your work at its very best.

Those of you who still use the print portfolios: How do you present those? Is it a non-descript black case with matted/dry mounted prints? Or something more eye-popping?

i do. actually when i shot film. I usually made 8x11 prints of anything I thought might be of interest to anyone. I still have all these prints. Most are not even scanned onto my computer so its the only way I can show them. For showing work I think people like something they can hold and see infront of them. I find print and film to have a much better response than digital samples.

I do too, but thats for big corporate clients. for every day clients i have a box of post cards that they can take one of they like it, they each have a different image on them and my details, Pdf to email and display on my ipad or lap top at meetings, a few different sized photo books, each designed for different occasions, eg catalogue, portraits, hospitality prints etc.

It realy depend on the clienyt but i think a hard copy is worth it. People hav eprobably seen your work online but having it to hold in their hands just reminds them why they chose to meet with you. Plus every one like a good book
