Yes, many of us do exactly that.

Contact the editor or picture editor of your target magazine/newspaper and tell them what you have.

Chris, Try to get the book by John Harrington, Best business practices for the photographer. There is a wealth of information in there and he discusses what photo editors look for and how they prefer to receive submissions.
Now for the downside. Most publications pay dismally or less. You will get worked over like a two bit whore if you don't know how the game is played. The desire to see one's name published next to a image has created a massive flood of the image market. See, the post about how stock photography has committed suicide. Now if you have some truly unique images that you believe will be attractive to the photo editor and you truly understand just what it is that you own and how to price the use of according to the principles of copyright, then it may be to your advantage to seek out this relationship. But understand that the photo editor has his known and befriended providers and go to photographers, otherwise he/she would not be the photo editor or higher up the food chain. So you will have to do your home work and put in the effort to break into the starting lineup. Good luck and hope to see you be successful. Jim |

Right now as I'm still in portfolio building stages in model photography I'm very willing to submit work without any compensation just to build a tear sheet model portfolio to gain more access to more models in my area that only willing to let me photograph them if I have been published into print. EDIT just noticed two different Jims replied to me..

It is all about research and knowing your markets. You target your book to the particular publications market. Pointless putting shots of cute kittens into portfolio to show to a publication spec_ialising in alternative fashion or the like. Quote:
If you are trying to get a book together based on fashion/model shots to potentially work in that area, then there are many thousands of willing models "out there" who are looking for shots for their own books on tfp basis or who you can pay for their time you most certainly do not have to be published already. For tfp you have to be competent and produce work which the models could use. DON'T submit work for nothing to publications. Except for generic stock type of shots publications will not be interested in just random shots of models. You need to explain more what exactly you are trying to do and you will get more helpful responses. Bottom line though is whatever area you want to try and get published, you need to study the publications in that market and target your shots accordingly.
