Unfortunately I do not have the extra income to purchase or even rent another lens. Even if I did the gig is tomorrow. So I will be using my 18-55mm Nikon lens. But using a white film canister as a diffuser is a great idea thank you for the tip!

Anyhow, my one piece of advice for making this gig work out slightly better... Set the camera in manual. Choose an aperture/shutter/ISO that allows a little bit of the ambient light to come in. This way you've got some light in the background, and the foreground/subject will be picked up by the flash. What you don't want is to have a picture where the subject is lit by the flash and the background is black. Tell-tale sign of pop-up flash and generally cruddy pictures. - Walkere

Well, how did it go?

I took photos in a dark room today. It was at a bowling lane for a party of 150. I had a 35 1.8 prime and a SB-600 though so it went quite well. I had to walk a lot though.
Sorry for stealing the thread, but what I am trying to say is that I know that if I only had a kit lens and pop of flash the results would suck. Since I know the pictures would not turn out to a level that I want to deliver, I would have left the camera at home. You have to know your limits.
