Unfortunately I do not have the extra income to purchase or even rent another lens. Even if I did the gig is tomorrow. So I will be using my 18-55mm Nikon lens. But using a white film canister as a diffuser is a great idea thank you for the tip!

So to recap, you're shooting indoors in a dark room with your d60 with the kit lens 18-55 f3.5-5.6 using the pop up flash with a film canister diffuser...and you're charging $100.
That should be fun.

Yup. Sounds like a real great situation to be in... I'll echo the other posters and say this is ill advised without a speedlight to bounce off the ceiling. If you plan to keep this up, your first investment should be in a flash - a LumoPro LP160 is a great low budget flash. It packs a punch, and if you're bouncing off the ceiling you can pick a manual setting for the flash and leave it be for the night.

Anyhow, my one piece of advice for making this gig work out slightly better... Set the camera in manual. Choose an aperture/shutter/ISO that allows a little bit of the ambient light to come in. This way you've got some light in the background, and the foreground/subject will be picked up by the flash. What you don't want is to have a picture where the subject is lit by the flash and the background is black. Tell-tale sign of pop-up flash and generally cruddy pictures.

I too would like an after action report, but since the OP hasn't logged on since their last post, I think we've seen the last of them.

I took photos in a dark room today. It was at a bowling lane for a party of 150. I had a 35 1.8 prime and a SB-600 though so it went quite well. I had to walk a lot though.

Sorry for stealing the thread, but what I am trying to say is that I know that if I only had a kit lens and pop of flash the results would suck. Since I know the pictures would not turn out to a level that I want to deliver, I would have left the camera at home.

You have to know your limits.
