Hello, I'm new to this website.
I am currently studying Photography at college and want to start selling my photographs. This is my Flickr website: Flickr: Photography_Gal's Photostream What images do you think would sell, how much should I sell them for? I really need a boost into selling my first lot of images and don't know where to start ! Any idea's? Thanks Lauren

Hi Lauren,
Welcome to DPS and photography in general. First, I'll say, put on your flame retardant flak jacket as I feel the responses you get in this thread may be a bit harsh. All I want to say is check out some of the other threads on selling your images online such as HERE. Reading the top of the thread you post to and the "Search" tool are your friend.

Being brutally honest:
Your photos are technically sound, but uninteresting. And selling prints is tough. I sell a few here and there, but they're not exactly flying off the shelves (or walls, in this case). I have 5 or 6 prints for sale hanging in a local coffee shop. Every time I talk to the staff, they constantly tell me how much people talk about them and how interesting they are. I've sold one print in that coffee shop in the last year. I've done much better with stock photography and licensing than I've ever done with print sales...might look into that instead if you're looking to make a few bucks. |

+1 to photoboothguys comments.
I was bored looking at your flickr page - and the HDRish one should be deleted, it is truely awefull. But to be a little more helpfull, from what ive seen of your work try postcards or notecards, magnets and other touristy type stuff. HTH |

I would say stock photography... I like this pic Boat Racing | Flickr - Photo Sharing! . Kinda wish it was a little wider. maybe in BW with very minor vignette .

I think the question you have to ask yourself is...
"If these were someone else's images, would I want to buy them?" While you might answer "no" because you already have a camera and are capable of taking those pictures yourself, you have to remember that that is going to be the answer for most people too... unless you're doing something that exceeds by a couple of degrees of separation the ability of a potential customer, you're going to have little to no appreciable success... selling work is hard. selling work that isn't centered around people (portrait, wedding etc) is even harder because you don't have a market nailed down that has a sentimental tie to the work.. |

You and about 3 million others are trying to sell the same type of photos. Develop your own unique style photography that will knock an editors socks off instead of submitting images that have been seen thousands of times before. Dare to be different!

I think some of the comments on here are pretty harsh and not particularly helpful to someone who's asked for advice.
As I stated I think using stock photo websites is they way forward for you to make a small amount of money, and see some use for your photos. |
