The site isn't very old, has no page ranking and spelling and grammatical mistakes all over the site. While it looks like it might be set up well I'd be worried about listing my photos on there simply because it doesn't come across very professionally because of those errors. Perhaps they need a copywriter to go over their site?

Thumbs up Re: Difficult to earn with photography!

I have signed up at dreamstime.com to test if I could earn money with photography or not. However, after 3 days I got rejected for the reasons like no lens clarity, and so on.

For beginners like me, who just own a simple digital camera, earning money with photography is just a dream. After I realized that I can't sell them, I've made them available for free download at my blog. I decided that it would be better to let others use them freely because to make good photos I need to have a good camera but I'm not in a position to afford that price right now.

So, how is my strategy friends? Better to provide freely rather than never using them in any way. Also I know that the technological changes are going to make a lot of things more advanced and cameras aren't going to be the exception.

Still, I recommend everyone to try at dreamstime.com because it will help you learn a lot about selling photographs even if you don't sell a single photo now.

Prem Gaire, don't give up. I tried a few stock sites before I got in and I do have a good camera. It was about learning how to refine/improve what I was doing and also what kind of photos the sites were looking for. I now sell photos regularly at shutterstock.com and occasional photos at other sites.

I've been considering submitting some photos to one of those microstock sites. You mention regular sales, but how much do you make on each sale? I've heard that it's only a few cents for each image, but that can't be right.

Thank you for the encouragement. But I don't even own a good camera. No problem. I'll try to do whatever I can with my images like making postcards and so on.

Thanks for the reply.

Default In Response to Stock Submissions

I saw a couple of folks mention stock photography. Stock agencies are great places to submit your images for purchase by advertisers, etc.

I've submitted to both shutterstock and fotolia - but sometimes they're a little picky. Fotolia accepted some of my photos but shutterstock was a bit more choosey from what I experienced. Profits from these sites are mostly few and far between (I've only gotten one sold once or twice so far) - but totally worth trying!

Please take the time to read ALL their submission guidelines. TRUST ME. But here are a few things I have realized to help me with the process of choosing photos to submit -

1. You must have model releases for any photos containing a person. They are totally easy to get, but don't bother submitting a portrait unless you have it!
2. Make sure there aren't any copyrighted logos or company names in the photo - even in the background. They generally can't accept those, unless they have special permission.
3. Don't get discouraged if they don't accept your photos - sometimes they will refuse a photo for the dumbest reason. Just try another site or submit different photos to get a feel for what they want.

For more tips - I found this great beginner's guide to stock: Stock Photography, a basic guide

Hope this might help a few folks!

Default Check the number of downloads

I don't think there is a distinction of which photos sell more on which websites, but rather what kinds (e.g. photos that have humans in professional situations etc.) of photos sell more compared to others? You can figure this out by going to one of these sites and checking the number of downloads of different kinds of photos. You can also check what kind of market is out there for photographs involving beaches.

In general, it is much easier to sell to a market that is already out there than to try to create a new market. So I think that should be the starting point.
Additionally, you may try using Google adwords keyword tool to find out what people are searching in relation to beach photographs. may need to create a free account first.

Hi all

The thread is huge, and I was just wandering if you may have some thoughts on where an amateur could start and try to sell some photos? My husband loves to play with our camera (it's a good one, that's all I know ) and I'm kinda interested in internet marketing, so I might help him out, but I don't know the sites to start with. I'd appreciate any suggestions, thanks!

I think it better to have personal gallery. I do not think Redbubble and Imagekind are good enough. They give you only a very small percentage for your photos.
