I think that if you are at the beginning of your career you should do some work for free just to be sure that others can see your work, but that is just my opinion.

So I guess to sum up
Should you work for free?
Mom-yes
Friends-maybe
Charity-Maybe
Legit business-hell no
And never trade photography for sex

That is kind of how I have been doing things. Immediate family is free but they have to cover actual expenses at my costs.
Close friends same as above
Not so close friends and family-not free, but discounted slightly
Charity- free or discount, use them for exposure, but pick and choose
Other people-not free, full price or nothing

I literally just had a complete stranger call, gave him a quote and his responce was "maybe you could do me a favor..." favors don't feed my kids or pay my mortgage, sometime I just don't understand how people think..
