Default Photo to be used for Magazine Cover

Hi all...need some assistance. I've been doign studio shots since this past December and have gotten some nice shots and have met a few models that really like my work. One of those models informed me today that a magazine would like to use my shot of her for their cover (this is a first for me). Any suggestions or things I need to know? Should I be getting paid or at least credit for them using my photo?

I want to make sure I approach this correctly with the model and the magazine, so that I'm able to generate more interest but not cheat myself or come off as a jerk with my request. Any guidance would prove very helpful.

Mario

You should be getting paid AND getting a credit inside the magazine.

Amount you get paid depends on what the magazine is, its circulation etc etc.

Yes, you should get paid.

Also, doing the cover SHOULD get you paid MORE.

A cover image is usually good for $200-$500 EXTRA.

No tickie...no laundry. Byline credit doesn't put food on the table or pay bills. Besides....it sets a bad precedence to the art director, who'll use it time and time again to save money.
That's why the photography market is in such bad shape these days. People are willing to give the images away for byline credit.

Thanks for the great feedback and guidance. I'll be sure to step up to the plate properly as a first timer.

Good deal! If they charge for ad space, then they can afford to pay a photographer.

First off, congrats on your first cover!! For a shot that is that important (key shot for the magazine) definitely charge.

Absolutely you should be getting paid, and getting photo credit.

You need to find out the circulation of the magazine and then charge accordingly. If you don't have a pricing program like FotoQuote, or Jim Pickerell's stock photo pricing book, go ahead and find that info out and post again here, someone should be able to give you an idea of what the proper rate should be.

Congrats on getting a possible cover.
