Default Equipment Suggestions

I have been asked to photograph my cousins high school graduation ceremony. I do not have a zoom lens, so i am considering renting one. I am not to sure which lens would be best suited for the task. I imagine it will be a dark room with a brightly lit stage. Which lens would you suggest? I think i will need a zoom lens as i dont think i will be able to get right up to the stage. I currently have a Nikon D40X, i would perfer a lens that will auto focus on my camera. Should i bite the bullet and rent a better camera as well?

Thanks for your feedback!

He pretty much listed the best lens in the world for nikons. I use that puppy 90 percent of the time I shoot anything. If you are looking to save a little money you can rent the 70-200mm 2.8 VR 1 lens, the VR II came out so the VR I is available for pretty cheap.
