I have some jobs coming up with a company for their ads. Would you recommend?
It makes more sense to me to license the picture but I have no idea what to charge for the use of it. This will be used for magazine ads and posters. Some website use also. Any ideas on a single job price for a company licensing the picture? Thanks in advance. Juan

I agree with max harvardk, licensing, but more info would get a better answer.
I do all my commercial work charging for hours spent photographing and then for the license per photo that the client wants. |

Thank you for the reply. What kind of information you need in order to get a better answer?
Is for website and ads on magazines and banners. Some of this work will make it into large banners by main roadways. I will definitely license the picture. I will charge per hour I believe. Please let me know what else you need to get more information. Thanks again, Juan

Juan,
Charge job plus a licensing fee for each usage. Do not charge by the hour or use the term by the hour, use the term "creative fee" instead. Just calculate your hourly prices, how long it take you to get the job done: shooting time, editing time, pping time and anything you might have to charge to do a bang up job.

Agree- it's ultimately better to charge a creative fee and a licensing fee. Photography is not a simple hourly task, it's a creative skill, and in addition to the actual "work" of shooting the photos, you should be compensated by the exposure of your imagery. Each job should be priced individually based on the overall complexity and timeframe of the assignment and how the photos will be used.
Here's a great article about assignment photography pricing. Definitely read it over. http://www.barrymrobinson.com/pricing_how_why.pdf

Dont forget to increase the licensing fee with the size and resolution of the file. A web sized image will be a lot less than a print one and a banner or external display will be more again.
Also how big wil the banner images be? Are you using a medium format camera or a high end DSLR. If you can rent a medium format and make sure to take each set up with both cameras. HTH |

Thank you all very much for all the comments and advice. I believe I will license for sure. Reading more material about the subject.
