Default Question about pricing

Hey fellow DPSers I need some help on finding a price range for a contract that my city's visitor's bureau would like me to do. I just recieved an email asking to take 8 city pics around downtown with color corection, retouching and unlimited usage at min 18 megapixels- large format 300 dpi.

The same bureau licensed ONE of my images last month for unlimited usage for $2000 but at 8 images I think the price might scare them away if I keep the price the same.

Any ideas on what I should do as far as price?

cut them a volume discount: 15k instead of 16k.

Assuming the same amount of work is involved, etc.

Well there is actually more work in it because they licensed an image I already had the first time. This time around they actually want me to go out and take the pictures of specified places.

I'm surprised they didn't send you an RFP. Around my area they would send you details about what they want and either say "this is what we're willing to pay", if they want you specifically, or they would open it up to several photographers and say "tell us what you'll charge" and it's likely that they just go with the low bid.

I'm assuming that it's only me right now but judging off the email I think they are open to finding other possibilities as well.

Upon review of the image you were recently contracted for by the ..., I would like to have you provide an estimate for 8 new images as follows (min 18 megapixels- large format 300 dpi)

• 5 wide views of the ...
• 3 Views of the...

Total 8 images, WITH COLOR CORRECTION, RETOUCHING AND UNLIMITED USAGE.

Call me if you have any questions. I appreciate the opportunity to work with you and to see an estimate of time and cost based on this email ASAP.

Well, they gave you the go-ahead to call, so CALL! Ask to speak with your contact and ask how they want the bid (email, fax, and if they want it itemized). That's the reason for the call....

Now that you have him (her?) on the line see if you can get them to tip their hand and give you what they have budgeted for the job.

Also ask if anyone else is being offered the job too. Always good to know if you are or aren't the "only game in town".

You should be able to figure out where to go with those two questions answered.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
