Not as flippant an answer as it might appear at first.

It is no different than being any other sort of photographer. You learn how to take great images of whatever, when you get to a stage that you can market yourself then you do so.
For products or "commercial" photography that is no different than if you were a portrait photographer or a travel photographer or anything else.
You tout your work around relevant businesses and advertise your services in the relevant trade papers etc.

Take pictures of products.

The tricky part is becoming a paid product photographer.

You have to identify either a type of product (ie. Cars) or a type of client (ie. Backpacking Magazine) and go after it.

Actually you'll need a client and a subject, but focusing on one at the beginning may help narrow it down. Pick something you like though, you don't want to spend the rest of your days making ladies shoes look good. Well I don't at least.
