Default To charge or not to charge non-profit for use?

As a hobbyist photographer who has sold some work (landscape, animal) and also loves architecture, I asked a homeowner if I could tour & photograph a house he had on the market. It was a big mansion that wasn't selling and he was glad to oblige because I had a blog and maybe putting it on there would get him some more exposure.

So cut to 2 years later. A 501c non-profit (arts organization) is holding a fundraiser at the home and he wants to know if the woman who is holding the event can use my photos in flyers and all their promotional materials as "the logo" of sorts.

It's winter and they cannot get a nice, Spring photo with green grass, which is what I have and why they want it.

So part of me says let them use it and figure out how to do a tax writeoff for the contribution. Part of me says charge them for it since I spent several hours taking and editing the photos.

Any thoughts on what others would do?

1. You can't write it off.
2. Non-profit does not mean non-budget.

+1. I used to work for a non-profit agency that had more money than they knew what to do with.

even through non profit means no budget, someone in their organization gets paid....infact everyone gets paid, except for those who offer to do it for free.

Thanks for your responses. Ok, assuming I ask for a little remuneration, what might be reasonable considering I'm not a "pro"? However they're using it for all their posters, flyers, etc.

who cares if you're not a pro, your time and skill and equipment is still worth something.
they obviously like what you have done enough to ask for it.

The price is depending on what rights you want to give them.
when I have sold rights to images I have sent them a list of prices and what rights they get.

you could use this calculator
http://photographersindex.com/price-adv-calc.htm

these prices tend tro a little on the highside, but wil give you a rough indication of what to ask for.

Charge - quite simple really.

if you are feeling generous then offer a (slight) discount but definitely charge.

If you want to have some justification for doing so then check out the salaries of some of those "running" a few charities here Charity Navigator - New Ratings

As an example: the president of Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay gets 135k "compensation".

Donate the image with credits in the flyer.

1. You get your name to the type of crowd that are interested in art and have money to

2. Make some friends and don't behave like a pillick for a $50 flyer.
