1. Worthless

2. Should be a lot more than $50.

I think it depends on how you feel about the orginization. Do they do something you believe in, and support? Somebody stated above that you can't "write it off" for your taxes, but the feeling good about helping out might out weigh the monetary value of the picture.

I know there are a few organizations that I would let use my pictures with out even thinking about the cost.

But then again I'm new to this, so my opinion is only worth the paper it's writen on.

That's actually a good point. I often say the only time I'll work for free is for a cause I would support anyway. The caveat is, that you need to do it with no expectations of business growth from it. Be surprised and happy if it results in any.

I work for a non profit arts organization (opera company). We are always looking for donations and work hard to raise funds as ticket sales pay for about 45% of what it costs to produce opera. BUT, we have a budget for events and I know our development department pays a photographer to shoot events, and I pay someone to shoot dress rehearsals. We don't pay top dollar and vendors always cut us a deal, but money STILL changes hands. Don't give it away.

I figured out a solution that will make me happy: I've asked them for a permanent link to my photography website from their .org domain. Works for me. Hopefully, they will go for it.

I've done a fair bit of different work for non-profits. Sometimes I charge them and then donate some amount of that back to them. Or I'll at least give them an estimate of how much I'd charge to do the work even if I don't charge them. If nothing else, they need to understand the value of what I'm giving them.

If anything, charge them for the shoot and maybe... maybe donate the photos.

You don't want to be out of pocket.
