Default Marked proofs

I gave a client a set of 4x6 marked proofs. I used to put my logo in the corners, but I've had people crop out my logo, and just last week someone stole 30 of my pictures, cropped out my logo and put her own name on them!! (omg I was so mad, I freaked right out.)

So because of that, I now put my logo smack in the middle of the picture.

My client is complaining that the logo is covering her face in a few of the pictures.

To which I'm thinking "Well yeah, they're just proofs" - which leads me to believe she wanted to crop my logo out as well. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Anyway, can anyone think of a "nice" way to say something along the lines of "These are the proofs, the final unmarked prints can be ordered." or something... I'm terrible at wording sometimes!!

Your original response is spot on.

It also says, "I don't need to explain why. You will not use these photos for anything other than ordering. No I don't give my work away for free or to be modified by cheap clients."

I dont give my clients proofs: digital or printed. I bring the proofs (on my laptop) to a meeting with them and have them do their ordering right there and then.

The last two shoots I did (band promo shoots) I actually just edited them on site and we were able to tailor the results to what they preferred. Then I exported the JPEGs they chose (out of the whole shoot) and they paid me the money.

For these smaller (5-10 image) projects, it's really great having immediate feedback from the bands.

Back on topic.

This is another reason why I always show my clients the photos before I leave, even before processing. They can usually pick and choose the ones they like best, I add my personal faves, do the edits then have them approve the proofs before printing/burning.

Which reminds me. I really must bite the bullet and buy a calibration device to calibrate my MacBook Pro display.

I'd say: "based on the stage we are at right now, the watermark is necessary since I've recently had copyright theft. The ordered copies will be watermark free and for now I hope you can make decisions on the images despite the piracy prevention measures."

But I would also consider removing the watermark for one (the worse one mind you) so she can "sample the amazing quality of her face" and put it back on after. If you have other really good ones it won't be a worthwhile theft (or so I think).
