I want to buy a good used DSLR (preferably) Canon or Nikon approx 10 Megapixel for photographing childrens clothing so I need to have a good image quality of the fabric texture & the clothing. I need to hunt for a good zoom lens 28-135 or similar. Has anyone any advice what type of DSLR I should start off with? It can be 4 or 5 years old if indeed 10 MP's were made then.
I was going to get a 'bridge' camera such as the Canon SX20 IS (12 MP) for this purpose which I can get for under £200 but is this false economy? I am on a limited budget but have been given the chance to photograph clothing for an online childs catalogue for the next 12 months, so need to get this right. Hope you can help. Thanks for any help which is appreciated. Pete |

Pete,
Are you going to have access to a studio, lighting, backgrounds, etc? If not, a camera is the least of your worries. If so, and your budget is around $1000USD, and you're looking in the 10MP range, pretty much everyone has been telling me to get a used Canon 5D. The body can be had for a grand... but then you'll need to invest in a good lens or two. I hope this helps!

why not but a new cheap body for now like the nikon d3100 with kit lens 18-55 for $599 (saw this price on amazon on saturday)
u can add nikon 55-200 for another $150 if u read reviews about this lens it is a kit lens too yes its cheap but image quality is greater than even the some prograde equipment http://www.photozone.de/nikon--nikko...w--test-report http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showp...t/1088/cat/all http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/s...page=12&stype= you would think i shoot with a nikon but no i use a canon camera but that budget deal and image quality for less than $800 can't be beaten by canon. Hope u get the equipment you need. if u need fast glass buy a nifty 50mm 1.8 they will save you cost less than $100. Don't buy expensive cameras buy good glass. so u will eventually need more expensive equipment and some would say buy it once but i see people use their kit equipment for many years without a problem and i see friends use some expensive equipment that have faults just like everything else. after all it's all man made |

Have you ever been a product photographer before and just how long have you been a photographer? Give us more information to help you not look so bad to your client. Most of these online sellers, don't pay too much for photos. To do a good job, you're going to need
studio lights as well.

When I was looking for a used camera, I found that people wanted way to much for used Canon or Nikon. Sony, Pentax and Olympus were far less expensive for equivalent bodies often with decent lenses. I bought a Sony A100 with 3 lenses for less than $300.
Like everyone else said, what is your budget and what equipment do you already have access to. One word of caution about the entry level Nikon's. D40x, D60, D3000's and D5000's limit your lens choices to newer lenses with internal focus motors. A D80 would be a better choice as they can use older geared lenses.
