Don't think so much about people stealing your images, because if they REALLY want to steal them they will. With CS5's content aware fill tool, it's even easier. The idea with watermarks is to make your images and your name visible and trackable in case your photos get separated from your website.
I try to make them very visible, but not too intrusive. That's just my own way, though, everyone has a method that works for them and I've seen all kinds of sizes and placements for watermarks.
