Default Newspaper Article

This wouldn't exactly be considered earning with photography but I do have a question about publishing photos.
I attended a community event and took bunches of pictures incuding some of the vendors there. I am interested in writting a little article for the local paper about the event and would of course use the photos. Can I use the photos of the people I took without worrying about model releases? Would it be in poor taste, should I contact them about using the photos?
It was a GREAT event and i only have good stuff to say....I wouldn't get paid for it, just a fun little write up about the event.

I can say from doing it for a small time paper..

1. You must complete faster than they can which means you should have the story and pictures to them no later than an hour after you get the gist of the event.

2. Many times you must have this near completion before the event closes.

3. Speed is everything. If you do not have an optimized RAW workflow then you must shoot in peg in the interest of being fast.

4. You must know what their layout (text) software is. If they have to mess with it they simply won't do it.

5. Cut to the chase. Editors don't have time for much fooling around.

6. GET PAID. I can not emphasize this more. Get paid for your images, even it is only $20 an image. But get paid. If you have set your price low no one will EVER raise it for you. Ask yourself if your gear was free. If not then others expecting work from it must pay for it.

I appreciate the advise. What I really want to know is....can I use the photos I took without a model release. I've written for local magazines and newspapers before but it's always been animal related and I've used mostly my own pets so never worried about it.

No release needed for editorial.

Yes you can use these without a model release. Model release applies in advertising. It is however nice to know who the person is in the story (picture) to complete the story. Keep a small notebook handy. Just write file# and name on one line and you are set.
