Angry My camera takes great pictures - Giving stuff away for free

I just got a call from my brother who says he was paid $400 for some drag queen event. He gave them all the images on disc and just left the copyright hanging in the air. When I said copyright he had no idea what I was talking about.

The story is that I first purchased my XS then to one up he went out and bought a T1i with all the kit lenses then my mother gave me a T2i. That just burned his ass.

So he gets paid the $400 and I sit here begging for work. What really burns my ass is that he claims that he is good enough to not need DPS. I can honestly say that his photos SUCK. On a bad day I do better than he does. He is still a snap shooter and this just pisses me off. Can anyone say "green box" LOL

I refuse to give him anymore pointers as he seems to have all the answers. The big deal? I am stuck in a small town near Lacrosse, Wi and he is in Albuquerque, NM. I guess it is easy to pay the bills and suck at the same time in a major metropolis.

Hmm, I seem to remember seeing a thread very similar to this not too long ago but it was sisters. You have my sympathy.
I have no idea how far away from each other you live but perhaps you could go advertise in his neighbourhood - so people can see how bad he is. Though obviously he gets the work anyway because he is cheap!

Yep, that was me!!
I so feel your pain. This is the story of me and my sister, except for a couple of details. She constantly has to one up me or counter everything that I do or say. It drives me crazy. And her work is okay, just blah. Very under exposed and very very poorly processed. AND she also refused to come to DPS to get some feedback and advice.
She really pissed me off last week when I wrote an article on my blog about post processing. She wrote up this big counter arguement saying that "manipulating photos like this means that you are not a real photographer." Oh that just chapped my rear end. PM me and I will send you the links if you want to read it for yourself. It is crazy.
But yes, I totally understand how you feel.

Just imagine the incompetent offspring that would result from Nicole's sister and Izzy's brother having children. You could use their prints to induce vomiting in place of Ipecac.

As is so often the case in situations like these, don't measure yourself against your siblings. Set goals as to what you want to accomplish and work towards those.

Thankfully, my beverage was nowhere near my mouth before reading this comment, otherwise I'd be down a 19-inch LCD.

Fortunately, I'm just up against Me, Myself and I (which is bad enough, I'll tell ya!)

Sorry, Iz (and Nicole). Siblings can be a real PITA sometimes.

lmao Boomer.. hilarious.

My husband thinks the same of post processing.. that a "real photographer" should just take pictures good enough to not need it and that I'm just wasting my time in Photoshop and/or lightroom. bullshit.. lol.

Post processing is basically the digital version of working in the dark room for crying out loud.

Personally I wouldn't give out dull uncontrasting photos that haven't gone through some very simple processing. My style in particular is mostly just an "up the contrast, correct the exposure a bit, maybe doing a bit of clarity painting on the subject's face, sparkle the eyes with a +exposure brush" then export.

This kind of stuff used to get to me. Then I realized that my clients will be the ones who enjoy my work and I need to make sure THEY know how to find me. There will always be someone out there who makes more money, has a counter point or, in general, rubs you the wrong way. I've had someone claim to work with me to get access into a 5 star property, use my name in keywording, accuse me of cheating on my wife to detroy my reputation, blatantly copy my shots, etc... Can;t help them and I take solace in the fact knowing that, no matter what, they will always be a follower.

Be a leader and don't forget, when you look to see how close they are behind you is when you run into a tree.
