Bingo !!

Alex you are 100% spot on. thats exactly where it's from..lol

But the thing is I want to do it just for the experience... But i still want to retain the master dvd and the rights to all my pics i take...and of course future contacts for maybe some paid stuff further down the road etc, I'm looking at it being a opportunity for opening some doors. you have to learn somehow and i figured this would be a good way to get the ball rolling etc. i supose i could just do it and give them a copy of the photo's and BS them and tell them it's the master. or "if" i get this i'd just explain to them that i own the master and you guys get the copies period. if they tell me to bugger off then i have had nothing to lose

grant

I personally wouldn't get too hung up on this particular job. It sounds pretty dodgy (in the sense that they basically want you to give them everything, for nothing).

Other opportunities will arise.

So, they're going to put you in a room with a bunch of fashion designers and beginner models? Sounds like a great marketting opportunity to me.

It ain't all about the money. Sometimes we do things for experience and fun. Doing a gig for free is a great way to gain experience without a lot of pressure, so the next time you do a similar gig you'll have the experience and confidence to charge what you're worth. And doing a job like this will help you make the contacts to get you more jobs.

The only thing I'd try to negotiate is retaining rights while still giving them royalty-free rights.

Personally, even without much experience I wouldn't do a free shoot for an organization I had no interest or affiliation with. I did plenty of freebie and low-cost shoots for friends and non-profits when I was starting out, but always because I had some personal connection to what I was shooting. And now even friends have to pay me for professional photos.

Doing jobs just for experience can go both ways. It can sometimes be a great way to learn, but it can also be such a pain in the butt that it's not worth it. Like any job, it's all about how you deal with the people involved. If you can make a good deal with then, then it might be worth it.

If not, then I wouldn't waste too much energy on it, there are plenty of other learning opportunities out in the world.

Thought so .....if you do end up doing.....YOU make the contract NOT THEM !

Specify that you are giving them rights to use the images but you retain master copyright of the images !

I love how we make up terms on this site! Seriously though, let's not muddy the water.

If you really want to do it, try to negotiate a better deal for yourself with the rights.

A post a few back lead me to believe you think that just because they aren't paying you, they "can't" take the rights to the photos. Sort of like the opposite of work for hire. That's simply not the case. "They" can take whatever rights a photographer is naive enough to give them. "They" can stipulate that the only way to work for them is to give up all rights including ©. Then, you have a choice, agree or not, work for them or not.
