Question portfolio for school ?

hi,

i'm not sure if i'm posting this on the right forum, but i was wondering if maybe someone could give me a hand ... i'm applying at a photogra´phy school, to do a couple of 5-week courses, but i wanted to hand out a portfolio so i could skip the 1st level ... i've been into photography my whole like, and have been shooting with a dslr for the past 4 years ...

i want to make the portfolio with black card paper, or something a little heavier, etc, and then i don't know if put it together with a ring or how ... they don't sale the portfolio folders that you can find in the states here, so i have to go with something more homemade ...

what kind of photos do they look for, when approving a portfolio so you can go into a more advance course???? ... here's my online gallery, if anyone could give me a hand i'd really appreciate it : Fluidr / dau ·'s photos and videos

thanks so much in advance !!

The big thing here is showing enough that you can get your skills across, but not so much as to overwhelm or bore your audience. You also dont wanna show so much work that youre showing sub-par stuff either. I'd say 10 images is a good figure to aim for (say 8-12 of your absolute best).

What kind of courses are you taking? That'll greatly influence what images you show.

Your link wouldnt open for me, so I can tell you specifically.

You need to show your technical skill as well as artistic, and portfolios generally follow a theme, it can be loose like portraits, BW, landscapes etc.

Make sure you demonstratethe basic skills like focus, dof & exposure in different situations, eg backlit portrait exposed correctly. They also look for artistic eye and composition and style. A short description of teh photo and why you took it or chose it as well as teh exif data will help.

I have seen portfolios presented in nice cardboard boxes with the photos mounted on black card and the description on a lable on the back.
