Well, she got back to me and told me she was hoping to get the image for a free or next to free (big surprise!). Of course I told her I couldn't do that, but I did end my email by asking her to send me a free copy of her book when it gets published, signed of course. Do you think I'll get one???

Oh well....

Time to focus on the galley show. I think I'm going to have a bunch of images printed on canvas with gallery wraps. Any suggestions where to have this done?

I'd have asked for the original manuscript for free, rather than a copy. Might have driven the point home a little more, LOL! I'm being facetious, of course, but still....

You just might. The book will be printed anyway, and if you like it you're likely to recommend it. Totally different animal than an image. Now, if you had asked for the original manuscript or the one and only surviving edition . . . :-)

I hope you went further than "I can't do that" in explaining why. We need to educate the client pool a bit.
