Red face Darn Domains

I was really looking forward to having my website go up to showcase my photos and try to find some clients, right?

I was so naive to even think it'd be available! And every variation that I try (and some which I don't even like) are all taken. Bummer.

What to do. What to do... hmm.

It's an unfortunate side-effect of domain squatting. All the good names (and most of the bad ones) have been taken years ago. However, a lot of them are not in use. So if you really like a name and you see that the domain is parked, you could probably make an offer on it and see if the owner is willing to sell.

If you express an interest, the squatters will counter with some ridiculous number. Be sure that they have your email address and send you lots of “offers.” Ignore and the price goes down to something a bit above reasonable.

It's usually best to just express interest without a concrete offer and wait for them to name a price. In most cases, you can counter with half and win :-)
