Default Someone wants to buy some of my photos

I got this email today through flickr.

Subject: Your photos of Eastern Panhandle of WV
Date: 3rd September, 2010

Hi Nicole,

I happened on your flickr image (aug 2010) of a beautiful landscape near Slanesville, WV. I am looking for images of Martinsburg and surrounding areas and am wondering if you might have more images in your stock.
Please call me at any of the numbers below or e-mail me at XXX if you have a few minutes! I need images by next week! Our budget is $75 each for smaller run images and 150 for larger images. I do think your image in Slanesville would be of use to the layout if nothing else.

Our Fall 2010 issue has a "profile" written about what it's like to live and practice (medicine) in Martinsburg, WV.

I googled the publication that she has listed in her signature line (which I did not included here). It is real.
I am very interested in this and I do have other photos that she might be interested in, but I have never sold a photo before. What are some things that I need to take into consideration? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats!

Usage rights is usually the main thing to consider. Do you give them one-time usage rights or royalty-free (use as much as they'd like)? Exclusive rights? Price will usually vary depending on what usage rights they pick. Most likely, they'd like royalty-free.

Hi Nicole,

Sounds ok for a one time use in a publication with a smallish print run. I would point out to them that you still own the copyright and you are free to sell the images but that you would not sell to a competing publication (medicine in that area) for a year or two. Do not forget to ask for credits and if they want to use the images on their website and will not move on price ask for a link to your gallery.

When you ask about all of this, just do it in the right way. You don't say, "btw, you do know I still own the rights..." Write a contract, specify which images, prices and what kind of usage rights you plan to give them. Send that to them and they'll let you know if they want/need more.
