Here's something I found on Black Star. A lot of truth here. A Photo Credit Doesn’t Pay the Rent | Black Star Rising

Thank you for posting this. I just sent out a tweet as I believe it applies to non-stock/commercial photogs as well. So tired of hearing about all the free publicity I'll get for giving away my hard work.

This time I agree with him.

Photo credits 99% of the time have zero value. They have to at lease offer up something of value. Press credentials to the next event would be nice.

They don't pay the rent, but they do have value.

They look better on a resume than not having any.
They get your name out.
It's kind of cool to see your name in publication.

I just read it. It makes good sense. I've been published in the same blog a few times, unpaid though.

But I like this quote from the article

"if your photos are good enough to be published, they are good enough for you to be paid for them. "

It's an excellent short article. Well worth the read.

I'm in the situation now where publications are asking for my work but aren't willing to pay for it. Unfortunately, these are smaller publications catering to mixed martial arts and grappling. I am building a little (good) reputation in my area now, however, and feel I can insist on being paid.

I am also approaching some of the larger publications in the sport in the hopes they are willing to pay for work. I've seen some of the work they publish, it's just not all that good.

Thanks for the post.

There is only one publication locally that I will give reprint rights to. That is only because there is only ONE paid person and it is a not for profit organization.

Ask them what they pay the writers. Most folks I know read about 1/2 the content in magazines, but they look at all the pictures.
