What kind of host or domain are you using? I tried out wix.com and it seems OK. Easy to organize however limited in customizing the layout. What would be a good place to start? Is their a site were I do not have to know another program just to set up my website or would I have to start learning web design.

Whats the limitation that WP is imposing on you? Did you upgrade to WP 3? Do you have WP3 compatible theme?

Don't get me wrong, both WP & Joomla are great (its more like Nikon vs Canon), but Joomla does have a harder learning curve than the WP & for a website (at any level of customization) WP should be way easier than Joomla.

I bought my domain and hosting with godaddy. After you sift through all the crazy offers it ended up being something around $5 or $6 a month. Then I used wordpress and it was pretty easy to get started. I have no idea what Im doing when it comes to the internet and I followed some video tutorials on how to set my sight up and it worked out fine for my purposes.

I know WP is the defacto on here, and thats fine its great. Simple, tons of themes to buy, lots of customizations. Its more than most photographers will ever need.

That said, (and this is coming from using them both several years ago, and now being joomla exclusive for more than 3 years, so I may be biased) Joomla works better for me because I find it to be more flexible and customizable. You can create any site you want with joomla, where wordpress is primarily a blog first that you can customize to be other things.

This may have changed with wordpress three though, haven't messed with it. Nikon vs Canon is a good comparison....... Don't let people scare you away from Joomla though, there is plenty of help out there in both free and pay for books and guides that anyone can learn and use it.

Whether you learn Wordpress, or Joomla, or build a site from scratch, honestly no turn key simple solution is going to produce an amazing website, good enough to work? maybe, amazing......no. You have to either put in the time learn web enough to build an amazing site on your own or pay someone else to do it. We live in the digital age, if you are serious about building your business, put some serious time and effort in your website!

EDIT: Just noticed you said personal website...sorry bout the business emphasis on that post.

@ tzimmerman, can't agree more with you. I do use both, I work as a web designer / developer (photography is just a hobby) but since the OP mentioned personal & "would I have to start learning web design." I did want to mention that the learning curve for Joomla is harder than WP

With WP3, things are even easier (specially at menu/site structure thing - where WP 2 failed), to work as CMS of a website & not just a blog, it would easily do satisfy all newbie's wishlist. I would suggest to go with joomla, if the site owner wants to setup e-commerce thing, or a shopping cart, more client interaction.....

@ MaterAce, What do you want to get from the website??

I am using Microsoft Office Live (Share Documents and Files Online | Create a Free Website | Microsoft Office Live) because it's free and has great tools/reports on site usage. It's not the prettiest out there but for right now it does fine.

I bought a domain name through GoDaddy as well. Less than $20 for a year. Works for me. Easy to link up with my host, too.

When I start making more money I will probably switch to something else. I was thinking about getting a Wix site at that point. Do you like it?
