I mentioned on another thread that I was having trouble with customers asking for the full res CD. On my website, it said that a CD with watermarked web-sized images will be provided with any package ordered. Then I said that the full res CD will be provided with any $250 print order, along with a print release form.
I got a call today from an interested person, and she wanted to know if I would sell the CD separately if she didn't want that many prints. I said I would, for $250 minus the cost of her purchase, but that the web CD was free. She sighed, said thanks and hung up. Why is this such a deal breaker? Anyway, I think that maybe I should't have that even advertised on my website. Maybe I am making it sound like there is something wrong with the web CD by even mentioning the full res CD. So I took the part about the full res CD off. But the last few clients have purchased the $250 in prints to get that CD. Now if it's not an option, I wonder if my print sales will go down. I want to sell each image separately, but should I mention it on my website, or just tell them if they ask specifically? |

Agreeing with elkidogz...maybe you need to provide more explanation on the difference?

Why not go the other way? Leave the info about the full res disc and remove the mention of the web res disc.

Exactly!
Give the web disc as a gift, a not mentioned extra. Be sure the web images are watermarked and that there is a web only use license. Keep the resolution web sizes, like 400 x 600 pixels.

+1 to all the above
Also, in the case of the sighing caller, most people want something for nothing All they see is that it is a CD of images (the hi res disk) that if they can get their gubby little hands on can produce inferior A4 (max size) images at home This is what they want They dont want to pay you (coz they dont engage their brains) for your time and effort in producing the images They just see them as images that they want to print Give your CD low res CD away with every purchase and reserve the High res for people who spend $250 on prints P.S. How much of the £250 on prints is profit for you? Add the cost of your paper + the cost of your ink + an hourly rate for your time during printing + maybe $0.50 per print to pay off your printer If all this equals say, $105, why not offer the Hi Res CD on your website as a purchase of $150, just for the CD and Images? Just a thought

Thanks all! I thought about just offering the CD for sale, but then I figured they wouldn't order any prints and I would actually make less. I order through an online lab, so my cost is roughly $50 plus packaging, but it depends on what sizes they order. I also thought about charging per image for the high res files.
The chain studios around here say they will give you the CD if you get 3 poses, which is about $60 (no sitting fee), but they don't tell you these are only 500 pixels on the longest side. People think they are getting the "CD" but they can't make good prints from that. AND they don't give permission to print, they also don't tell people that. |
