"That was me" is worth exactly ZERO dollars and ZERO cents. "Great exposure" is such a cop out used by those who want something for nothing. Sadly, too many people just like you fall for it and don't realize that "exposure" doesn't pay the rent.

Sure, there are some exceptions where exposure might be worth something, but those are rare.

The marketing value of getting your first print out in public is worth far more than the $320 lost in pricing.

am coming at this kind of late, but I agree with the other posters. $80 is laughable, and they should be ashamed of themselves for it. I would have no problem telling them that either.

Ahh, finally a chance to give something back to the DPS forums :P

I have been a member of a group of sport enthusiasts for god knows how many years. We started as a small internet community of around 30 but the core have since developed into a fully fledge company making tens of thousands, the sport itself grown from maybe 50 of us to hundred of thousands throughout the world.

A number of years ago I made a design - a "logo" - that the big bossman / forum admin really liked and wanted to buy it from me all out. After some heated negotiation, I agreed to £2,000 and it was his, but I wanted full credit where appropriate (website, books etc).

Some years after he did admit that he would have gone to £5,000! Lesson learnt :P It took me maybe 10 minutes to come up with, but he valued it enough to go up to £5k. Infact he sent me a cheque for £50 about 2 years before, got the name wrong and never sorted it out thank god.

So, from my experience, and what I've read in this thread. These advertising people know what stuff is worth but will try and get it as cheap as possible. I'm actually a salesman by day and people are amazed when they want everything for nothing and I just tell them "If you don't buy it, someone else will" or "I could sell it to you at a loss or sell it to the next person at a profit". Infact, it angers me when people demand/expect discount - that they don't feel that my professional service, knowldge and ability is worth paying for.

I hope you found a buyer at the price that this wonderful photo of yours deserves. Great shot.

The matter has now finished because their idea of a fair and reasonable price was very different to mine. They were offering me $80. for the photo and did a very quick back step when I asked for $400. I asked for this only because I have photos like this on a Australian stock site and for a photo of this size I think it is the going rate. But since I have no idea of what I am doing I would love to know from someone who does have some idea.
Hey, for all the usages they want, the $80.00 offered might get them internet usages for about a month. For all the usages they require start out at $50.000. But don't sell them the rights to the photo. Give them two year limited rights only to those specific image requirements they requested.
