Default What to wear or what do you wear?

To photography shoots?

So far the ones I have done have been friends and of course it has been HOT....(I am talking over a 100 degrees).... I overheat really fast, so have been wearing my shorts. Now I know this is a no no and won't be doing that when the client isn't a friend.

Sooooo, what do you all wear? (besides clothes) what type? dressy? casual? (not talking wedding stuff)

I specialize in high end real estate photography and most of my clients are very wealthy individuals. I don't dress differently for my lower end clients than I do for my higher end ones. I always wear pleated slacks with either a button down shirt or a golf shirt.

It is all in how you want to appear to the client. If you dress nicely, the perception they have of you and your work will be higher. The way you carry yourself and your confidence will decide whether you get a job or not! Believe me, the way you dress has a huge impact on people. I say pick something dressy, but not over the top dressy.

it largely depends on the shoot and what the event is. Upscale reception at the Intercontinental I was in my all black designer gear. An engagement shoot the weekend before in cargo shorts and a faded Wisconsin shirt. While I agree with Powerpix to a certain extent, I think more of it has to do with your confidence and how you carry yourself. You don't want to turn up looking like a Goodwill perks club member or liek you haven't showered for a week, but you have to be comfortable enough to do your job and fit in with the environs.

Depends on the shoot:

Working a high-end nightclub, I follow staff dress rules. That means black dress pants, black shoes, black or white dress shirt and a tie.

Most of the time it's fairly relaxed: jeans, t-shirt or hoodie, or a button-down shirt. In 2.5 weeks I'll be shooting a fitness competition. What will I be wearing? A pair of running shoes, a moisture-wicking shirt (the kind I wear to the gym) and a pair of camouflage cargo shorts. Why? I need the movement.

Not sure if you are male or female, it really depends on the shoot. If you are female.....A casual family at the beach or a portfolio shoot with a model I already know, I will wear jeans and a casual top that is a bit dressier than a T shirt. For a more formal shoot in the studio or a commercial job I always wear dark pants and a fairly dressy top (my personal choice is not button up, as a female with DD breasts I do not want to acidentally slip a button and expose more of the real me than I would like to). I think the same kind of look I would use for a job interview. I have a few different suits which can dress up a less dressy comfortable top but if you are already overheating I would look for light feminine fabrics in simple designs. I choose tops that are as dressy as I can get away with, wearing with pants, for weddings. I go shopping for clothes just for work so I really think about functionality, pockets in the pants, how hot it will get (especially at weddings), getting tops that won't have wardrobe malfunctions etc.

Guys it is easier for you, you don't have as many choices and can get away with pants, shirt, tie.

I am just do this for a hobby, however I do ocassionally sell photographs & have a media pass..

Depends on the shoot.

(1) Semi formal event like an outdoor citizenship (breakfast barbecue)
Dressy casual with a black camera bag.

(2) A classical music concert. Very dressy casual or semi formal.
Again a black camera bag and black lenses.

(3) Shooting birds/wildlife.
Scruffy dark green or brown clothes so I can lie prone in the dirt etc and not worry about it. No camera bag.

(4) Shooting motor racing.
High visibility (safety or media) vest, cargo pants, practical boots, wet weather gear & sun hat.
Will be wearing a harness system for spare camera/lens and water bottles/food/sun cream etc.

thanks for the great replies!!

Most of the shoots have been very casual...outdoors (and yes sunglasses!) so comfortable attire for me so I can move around.

I just wanted to make sure what I had in mind for 'clothing' was what you all were doing....attire to fit the program!!

Thank you!!

oh yes, I am a girl too....and I hear you Sobriquet about the wardrobe malfunctions!! I like loose and blousey type of shirts....something I can move in.
