Default Juried show: ettiquette?

Hi all -

I got 2 prints accepted into a juried show starting in August. I'm pretty excited, as it's my first show and I entered on a whim. I've got the details down (I think) in terms of framing and prices and being "ready to hang" and all that, but I'm now wondering what the etiquette is in terms of thanking the jurors - I've read a bit here and there on the interwebs about sending thank-you notes to the gallery and/or the jurors, but I haven't been able to ascertain whether it's appropriate to thank them after being accepted into the show, or to wait until after the show is hung. Or if it's unnecessary and cheesy. Anyone have any experience with this? I don't want to sway their decision (it's already been made) I just want to be polite. Networking opportunity and all that.

I can't answer you question. However, it would help others in their answer when you at least tell us which country you're from. My guess is the US, as Americans sometimes forget they could be internetting long-distance ;-)

Very funny. Yes, we Americans tend to believe that the Internet is our invention and our province and often forget that others are playing now too. I learned recently that the most commonly used language on the Internet is no longer English, it's Mandarin. It's going to be a rude awakening for many here when the net is taken over by characters we normally only see on tattoos!

As for the juried show; I would be hesitant to send thank you notes. I have been on both sides of that issues and I'm afraid anything you do will come across as smarmy and pandering. If you get the chance to meet the jurors, by all means, introduce yourself and ask them about their backgrounds, it will tell you a lot about which kinds of images they are likely to choose. I recently saw that a big art show in Atlanta was bringing in a lady from Pennsylvania with a background in printing as their primary juror. That tells me a lot about what kind of images I should submit (they better be technically perfect) and while that may not help me this year, it will give me some insight into the kinds of judges this venue looks for.

Thanks - being smarmy and pandering is what I want to avoid.

However, I am American, to answer the other question, so maybe I'm automatically smarmy?

Hehehe. Yeah, the internet was a US invention. However, the URL - the thing that makes the internet easy to use - was European.

And English isn't even American :P Sorry to nag about this - I just hate software where I have the choice of "English" and "British English". IMO it should be "English" and "American English" instead.

Thank you for posting the question and to those who answered. I just recently been accepted into a juried show and was wondering the same thing.

And that's just one of many things I love about the Dutch - so wonderfully (and justifiably) proud of your nation's ability to speak faultless English, sometimes better than we English do.

I do try to speak as much Dutch as I can when I'm over there, but you people make it too darned easy not to. I've lost count of the number of times I've ordered a meal or drink (or more often just asked for as many Kroketten as I can stuff into my mouth) in my bestest Dutch, only to completely fail to understand the response and just stare blankly for a few moments, before the fast-food seller/waitress/barman repeats their question in perfect English...

Oooh, back over there in August - my stomach and I can't wait!

And as for Americans being automatically smarmy - I've met plenty of Americans on holiday (my sister works for an American cruise ship company, so my annual holidays are taken with a large proportion of my former-colonial cousins), and those that I've met have been, without exception, among the friendliest and most genuine people I've encountered. Almost as delightful as Canadians, in fact...

It's true that the Internet was invented in the United States...by AL GORE!
