Default Help! How much is it worth?

I was contacted by a web site Editor that wants to use one of my photos for an on-line segment and a related iphone application.

The offer is "credit for authorship of the photograph". The photo is actually a snap taken with a P&S, just got lucky I guess.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, primarily in terms of ensuring credit for authorship but with regards to any value of the photo as well.

Keep in mind that I'm a hobbyist (at best), I've never sold or had a photo published before and likely never will again. I won't make money from photography and would consider simply having one of my photos published as a small but worthy achievement alone.

Thanks in advance!

How much the photo is worth really depend on many factors that you haven't listed.

What sort of app, what's the price of the app, how well is the app expected to sell, etc . . .

"Credit for authorship" is worth exactly nothing other than an ego boost in 99.9% of cases.

The application is a walking tour iphone app, sells for $4.99 per complete "tour" and my photo would be one of about 50 included. No idea what sales volume is, certainly varies by City. This City, though well known nationally, is not one you'd expect to see routinely advertised internationally as a tourist destination.

Then they're paying, sorry. $5 for an app means you get a cut, whether it's an up-front flat fee or a cut of proceeds (I'd advise a bit of both).

Yep, OS has it right, and just for thought; your photo is about 2% of the overall set, so why shouldn't you get a cut?

OS, what would you suggest for an up front? With little confidence that the app for the location would be "big" seller, I'd hesitate to put a percentage on it. An up front fee would seem to be reasonable.

Keep in mind the photo is a P&S snap. Though it is a good representation of what I think the editor is looking for, it's more of a waypoint on the tour rather than a highlight.

Doesn't matter if it was taken with a $200.00 P & S or a $7000.00 MK IV Ds model. The main issue is that he'll be making money and you'll only get credit. Credit doesn't pay the bills, or more importantly earn you some money to put aside for an upgrade in camera gear.

I've never heard of an arrangement like this before, can you provide more information on how it works?

Well stated. Can you put a ball park figure on it? I realize the info I've provided is limited, I don't want to mention names, the web site, etc., but if there's something specific I may be able to provide please let me know.

The reality in this case is that they will just get another picture from another source if you try and bill them for 2% of whatever.
I would take the ego boost... it is all you could seriously have hoped for when you took the snap
