I don't think that a degree specifically for photography is necessary. A degree doesn't say how great of a photographer you are, just that you were good enough to pass. Your portfolio will help potential clients decide if you're good. Going to school can however give you a lot of experience and in broad subjects. If you have no training whatsoever you could focus too much on one subject and/or style and that could limit your jobs down the line. Unless you give yourself assignments on a variety of subjects you may not know how to approach a certain situation later.
Degrees aren't necessary but I think some sort of training would only be beneficial. Most importantly though probably would be business education as you'll want to make your business stable and successful for many many years.

One more point...
Just like they say that you don't need a "good" camera to take good pictures. It's how you use and understand your equipment that matters. Anyone can take a good or even great picture, but you need to do that consistently, and efficiently in order to stay in business.
