I've no experience in selling Art however I have seen the following being used in and around Melbourne for Photo/Art sales:

Cafes, for example 3 Bags full in Fitzroy/Collingwood - framed pics on the wall with price
Market stalls at school fairs - mostly smaller prints, cards and other lower cost items
Market's - there are travelling markets that appear in and around Melbourne. The most crafty/arty ones near Melbourne appear to be at the Abbotsford Convent (Actually - they have studio space there that might be worth a look), Observatory at the Botanical Gardens and also the Sunday Markets outside the Arts Centre.

Dependent upon your art, there are several private galleries that might be worth approaching if you visit and sense a similar vibe to your work.
Door knocking in the CBD - several buildings have open access to their floors that house many smaller suites of small businesses. They can be approached and you can sell tot he employees directly.

Good luck.

You could also try selling online through stock photography.

There are online shops you can sell from, like Etsy or even Ebay. I've been thinking about Etsy myself, more than Ebay because most people shopping on Ebay are looking for a great bargain. But those who shop on Etsy are specificly looking for something artistic and creative. That's just what I've come across lately.

Australia also has Redbubble for online sales. I think Sime might have experience of selling on this...

USA focused (but sell international), you could take a look at Imagekind (Imagekind: Buy Framed and Canvas Wall Art Prints and Posters from Independent Artists Online), which is a print on demand company focused on art and photography prints. That's the only one I can think of right now, but for sure there are many more out there...
