Earning via different types of photography

I am in the beginning stages of putting together a company for image/fashion consulting, styling etc...but as an aside, I'd also like to earn from photography as well. There are a lot of common ways I've heard about making money - weddings, portraits, photojournalism, stock pics, etc...but I would like to get more involved with fashion editorial, possibly winning some advertising work (like prints for a GQ ad)...etc. What is the best way to go about tackling that world?

I am building a site so that will help with credibility and legitimacy but as a photographer that shoots with very little equipment, can I still get work? Or do I need to be some guy with a mobile studio of strobes, flashes, reflectors and whatnot?

You will need some more studio-type equipment to get the kind of look that you uslaly see in big magazines.

If you start poking into the photo-blogo-sphereo, there are plenty of "behind the scenes" looks at commercial shoots.
