Default How to go about......?

I am wanting to put together a portfolio and was wondering how to go about getting models for portraits. I am just starting out and not sure how to go about this. Should I be charging anything or do it for free? Not sure how to go about this so any tips/comments would be great!

Thanks in advance!

you can register on Model Mayhem. It's full of asipring models/photographers/make up artists. You can select the age/gender/location when you search for models.

Generally you can get in touch with models who will work TF* (Time For cd/prints/etc). It's free to register, though I believe that MM requires you to point to a website/small online port to be accepted as a photographer (I could be mistaken on this).

I know some DPSers have done well out of MM.

What age models? What type of photography?

Don't have any specific age models in mind. Most likely adults and portrait photos.

you have to submit 3 or 4 images of people to make sure you actually have an idea which end of the camera to look through, and that you have some experience with something other than flowers and your pet cat.

pending acceptance you have free reign to ask models to do shoots

be prepared to be messed around.. but i've had some nice results and good experiances too.

Depending on where you live, try Craigslist. There are lot of aspiring models and actors who would love some pix - you can give them the digital files - and build your portolio.

I've run into three types of models on MM. First, the aspiring actor/actress/model who really wants exposure and will work with you (fees, location, direction etc). Second the prima dona who believes they are on MM because they want to be and will charge you a premium (read insane pricing because of the false belief they are already famous), and finally the fetishists. Like anything else in life make sure you get all the info you can from any model you use and get the details out of the way up front.

For example:
  1. If the work is "Trade For **" then put that in the model release and have a copy to give them that states this.
  2. If you have any stipulations for your photography add that to the contract/release as well.
  3. If they have any stipulations (they should add it for your signature and be responsible)

Ultimately this should work ok but avoid having them to your home if your studio is there, instead pick a nice park and buy a reflector to accentuate the lighting. Finally, AVOID Craigslist!.. Now that's just my opinion but there are far more fruitballs, nuts and freaks that just want you to see them naked on craigslist than actual models entering the business.

My best luck with models is a local modeling college. I've done several shoots with them and just got invited to their spring fashion show as a shooter. These are kids that really want to get into the business and as long as you treat them right will be a valuable resource as you move forward.

Just my .02 as usual take it as you want

Doug
